What ever happened to the strange and SO VERY WRONG world of movies circa 1969? Can someone answer me that? Maybe it was the free and easy sixties that lent more of a “whatever, man” attitude to the film stylings. It was a wild ride for sure.

Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly available to watch via the wonders of YouTube.

Here you'll find the strange little tale of a psychotic family frozen in time with two twenty-somethings dressed as school children and their mother and nanny playing right along. Of course, they're all completely mad as hatters!

So, what happens with their childish and often deadly games get out of hand? Disturbing sixties horror comedy in the blackest of fashion, of course! Sonny and Girly end up inviting someone home with them and he becomes a “guest” of the family. And, one wonders if he's not as crazy as the rest.

I miss the strange days of the HYPNOTIC EYE, the MAN WITH THE X-RAY EYES, and DR. STRANGELOVE. I feel like goofy fair like YEAR ONE just isn't on par with the likes of Peter Sellers tearing up the screen as several different characters in madcap comedy about atomic bombs. How can you beat that?

Ahoj všichni! Hello!

Verushka here with more news about Tanec Praha ("Dance Prague"). I can not tell you how excited I am about seeing Montalva Hervieu and their presentation of “Good Morning, Mr. Gershwin" June 2nd and 3rd! For those attending, we'll be meeting at pOp for dinner at 5:30pm. (Make sure you make reservations – spots are going fast!) amore eroma will provide transportation to and from the event via the amore autobus in the usual amore eroma style. As a special treat, pOp will have a special Tanec Praha menu and some special surprises in store! We'll venture to Music Theater Karlín after dinner, then head back to pOp afterwards for a nightcap and after party – transportation, dinner and after party all included in the pOp cost!
Remember, this is the last event Biennale de Lyon, and most likely the dance season in the Czech Republic. You can't miss it!

IMPORTANT NOTE!
Tickets for the show and the dinner are separate! You must buy pOp tickets AND Music Theater Karlín tickets. Buying tickets for pOp will not automatically get you into the theater!

I must be honest - at first, I wasn't sure I wanted to go. Like many others, I grew up listening to her and her modern, amazing music. She was in the mix and making things happen and provided the soundtrack to my young life. Now, much older, she's still trying to rock the party and I just was not sure that I wanted to see it. Would she remind me of my mother now? Would she still be able to get me dancing? Starý tanec?

No no! It looks like this will be a super fun show!

Double Feature: A Tale of Two Sisters

A Tale of Two Sisters (2004) Ji-woon Kim
(original title: Janghwa, Hongryeon)

This little delight comes to us from Korea and is by far one of my favorite films. It's a classic “stepmom” film and has some of the most creepy, sleep disturbing visuals and concepts that I've seen. This is no simple horror, slash and dash, however. This is a film that takes time to tell a story. The plot is developed expertly by Ji-woon Kim and his direction is fantastic. Another of Kim's works – the MEMORIES segment of THREE – also created a feeling of dread that drove me to get TALE at once. I was not disappointed.
The acting is fantastic as well, which sells it for sure. Jung-ah Yum plays the stepmother on the edge perfectly and Su-jeong Lim and Geun-Young Moon play sisters with a tenderness and vulnerability that is touching. They kept me locked into their struggles and in the film - never once being over the top or playing to some caricature of who they were trying to play.
The simple setting lets you settle in and watch as the events unfold. It invites you to roam within it's confines, but once there, you wish you were free to come and go as you please.
If you like character drama, strange goings on, and things that go bump in the night, you'll love A TALE OF TWO SISTERS.

Double Feature: Sisters

Sisters (1973) Brian De Palma

Margot Kidder of SUPERMAN fame stars in this De Palma classic about conjoined, orphan sisters raised by nuns and separated after years of being together. One sister has always been the happy one. The more normal of the two. The other is a depressed, sad girl. Once separated, the sibling rivalry that has always existed to a point becomes more and more painfully apparent.
This is mint De Palma in the 70s. The story is told in an almost noir detective style. The De Palma shooting style is all over the film and split screens and multi angles abound. Kidder musters up a French accent for the film and does a better job at it than Keanu Reeves did with an English accent in DRACULA, but it still slips around a bit from time to time.
This is a pretty strong De Palma story and screenplay and has all the earmarks of it. When looking the movie up, it looks like it's the first in the mainstream horrors that he made starting in the 70s with this film, then moving on to PHANTOM OF PARADISE, CARRIE and THE FURY. Unlike these three, however, SISTERS is based in reality and has more of a real world feel to it. It also has distinct shades of Roman Polanski's 1965 hit REPULSION and strikes a cord that is equally uncomfortable.

There’s a list of remakes now that is ever growing. Directors and studios remake tons of movies each year for various reasons. Updating something from the past, “revisioning” movies that have done well in the past, a “reboot” of a series and, of course, for money. Cold hard cash will drive a company to reshoot a popular film that has come out a mere year before. Sometimes this pays off, but sometimes it produces trash that doesn’t equal the original. Personally, I think I could do without them, but then I see something like 2004’s DAWN OF THE DEAD remake and I rethink the whole thing.

The new DAWN did it right. They took the general premise - a small group walling themselves up in a mall after zombies rise - and added some modern fun to the mix. I thought it was an amazing, well paced re-do and I loved it. But, this was a film that was remade 26 years after the original. I find that to be an acceptable time frame for sure. 25 years should be the cap.
Robert Rodriguez is remaking the classic BARBARELLA. Sure! Sign me up. I trust him. Give him a remake of a classic, campy, sci fi genre film - no problem! I’m sure he’ll bring a wonderful new look to the film. Why remake the ever awesome A TALE OF TWO SISTERS (The Uninvited - 2008) and wreck it with B-list American actors and actresses and botch the whole of it? It was a DAMN FINE FILM and was in no way, shape or form in need of a remake, IMHO. :) Why remake 2007’s brilliant and creepy [REC] one year later (QUARANTINE - 2008) to failed box office results? Why not just release [REC] the way it is to American audiences?

Maybe it’s the money.

Maybe it’s the possible hit that may come of it.

Brian De Palma’s SCARFACE in 1983 was a remake and it was a huge hit for the studio. It’s still a film that is held up as a modern classic and i bet it’s still making money for the company. The romance hit YOU'VE GOT MAIL was a remake of a film called The Shop Around the Corner. I loved OCEAN'S ELEVEN which was also a remake.

Then why the hell am I against remakes in general? I think I just want to see something new.

Can we put in orders for films we’d like to see remade somewhere? I’d LOVE to see a good remake of the awesome William Castle film THE NIGHTWALKER from 1964! It works if we’re holding to the 25 year law as well. Slap Anne Hathaway into the Barbara Stanwyck role so she can break a little further away from her current image of “princess” or “bride’s maid” and let her try out her range and sink her teeth in. Christian Bale and Johnny Depp would round out the cast nicely. Hell, maybe I’ll redo it myself! Can someone get me telephone numbers for Hathaway, Bale and Depp and loan me a few million dollars?

Dark Castle Entertainment is a division of Silver Pictures whose name pays homage to William Castle, a brilliant horror filmmaker from the 1950s and 60s who was a master at selling his films. When Dark Castle was first formed, it's goal was to remake William Castle's horror films, but after two Castle remakes, it moved on to producing original material, along with remakes of non-Castle films.

There MUST be other stories out there in the world. Other authors and screenwriters that have tales to tell us. It seems like remaking things is taking another slot one of these people could use to get their story out.

Of course, then we might be subjected to another Norbit.

Hello, kis babák! I hope you are all well, alive and happy!

Plans for celebrating Earth Hour were met with cheers and jeers this year. Candles and sweetness awaited those venturing to Délicieux: Paris and Prague’s now gloriously infamous pOp. Energy was saved and the world slipped into darkness as the gas ovens and a set amount of lights helped provide patrons with delicious meals at Earth Saving energy levels.
However, some babies didn’t get the memo in San Francisco! Tisk Tisk! Co-ordinated plans went awry as the lights burned brightly in amore eroma SF.
“No, we thought it was next week,” said one amore staff member. “It’s tonight?”
Have no fear, however! amore eroma will be dimming the lights for this week, bringing a little romance to the hills of San Francisco and making up for not playing in the Earth Hour festivities.

WATCHMEN
Well, this little one has finally made it out to see this movie WATCHMEN and I must say it rang some bells deep within me. ESPECIALLY during the Owl and the Pussycat sex scene! ME-YOW. Huncut! There was a little too much blood for this little one, but I loved the story and the alternate timeline. It made me want to slip into some spandex and stalk the bad people in this world. Instead, I decided to see some of the costumes worn in the movie!
While visiting San Francisco, I was able to go view the props and things used in the film! I suggest checking them out!

The exhibition features dozens of concept illustrations, preparatory sketches and original comic book pages illustrated by Dave Gibbons, the co-creator and illustrator of the critically-acclaimed Watchmen graphic novel. TOMATINA TOMATO FIGHT 2009

That's right! amore eroma will have a presence for the festival and the fight this year and I'm looking forward to it! We will be posting plans for the festival week and for the amore eroma tomate fresco! event on August 25th to top the whole of it off, so check back for details. We're going to eat, drink and be very merry for the week, so join us! I've planned out my outfit - travieso! - and I have been warming up my throwing arm, so beware. There will be tomatoes thrown and targets struck. Do you dare?

Unfortunately, plans for amore eroma's FRESCO! restaurant have been put to rest after several hundred meetings on the subject. Sometimes, things do not go as planned, but I have high hopes that those plans will change in the future and I'll be able to make Spain my home again. Until then, I will continue to roam until I feel settled somewhere. Though, I don't look forward to setting my roots any time soon. amore eroma keeps me pleasantly busy and I'm loving it.

For those following the dramas - Richard DeCoop is recovering from his motorcycle accident and will be returning to the Director position on the amore eroma production of In the Realm (working title) sometime in May. "Bones heal, but my pride is damaged," he said from his San Francisco home. "I don't think I'll be climbing back on the bike any time soon - if ever again." This came after reports that several amore eroma crew member on the set of Realm begged him not to ride the night of his accident. DeCoop charged the whole thing up to pride in his March 2009 interview - by yours truly - in GQ Magazine. Orsolya Jakabne was quoted as saying, "We're just glad he's ok. We'll try not to tease him too badly when he returns to the set." In the Realm's minor set back will not put the films release date in jeopardy.

Célébration Fête Nationale 2009
Exciting times around amore eroma, kis babák! We’re seeing some pretty amazing changes in the offices of Délicieux! Scope creep has seen some rather large scale changes coming from some rather small scale happenings. After the bomb threat in 2008, we’ve had to up our security and that’s made some people very upset. The simian asswipe that thought the threat was a good idea was caught, but his legacy of hate has made it difficult to manage security as a whole at Délicieux. We’ve tried to keep things normal, but are honestly afraid of lowering our standards in today’s harsh economic climate.
Sadly, Célébration Fête Nationale 2009 has been canceled this year. We cannot risk another event going awry this July. HOWEVER, we are planning to roll out some smaller events to ease the pain and keep our Délicieux:Paris patrons happy, healthy, well fed and dancing! Stay tuned.

Luc Besson (1997, The Fifth Element, The Transporter) shared a quiet meal with friends recently. He loved the strawberry mousse!
Mr. and Mrs. Depp dined and danced the night away, slipping away into private as the crowds tried to peep respectfully. Yes, Délicieuxites did very well giving Johnny and Vanessa their privacy. Good form. Thank you! The illusive and beautiful couple seemed happy to have their privacy and seemed very happy with their surroundings.

pOp v. Délicieux ? Nem! (No!)
No, kis babák! amore eroma’s pOp in Prague is NOT fighting it out with Délicieux. We’re not sure where this rumor was started, but there is no validity to it whatsoever. amore eroma is a happy family and Paris and Prague will not be going to war any time soon. As a matter of fact, we’re working on a Cross Pollination project that both bistros will benefit from! Stay tuned, Babies!

I kid you not. This guy was walking his duck down the street on Clement in San Francisco one night. It was a busy sidewalk and the duck stayed about this close the full time. The man walked across the street with it and it followed close at his heel, walking as fast as his little duck legs could carry him. The guy said he'd had Duke for a while and had just trained him to walk with him like this.

I’m going to go out on a limb here.

I think FACEBOOK is the comb-over of 2009. There. I said it.

Don’t get me wrong. I think that there are some major upsides to Facebook as well. You can see what people are up to without actually talking to them. You can drop “status bombs” on people and leave them wondering what the HELL is up. “Susan is wondering where to bury the body” or “Tim wondering if he’ll still have a wife tomorrow” – items like that. This is ideal for attention hounds looking for words of hope and cheers of “HANG IN THERE!”

There are good things about Facebook. No flashing backgrounds like MySpace, for one. I’m old. I know it when I look at my daughter’s MySpace page when she’s working on it and I feel like I’m going to have a seizure a la the 111 people that went into fits back in 1997 watching Pokemon! “YES! I see the flashing! Stop it!” At least Facebook lays there and pretends to be more adult. A façade of maturity. Of course, all that’s blown to hell when someone posts pictures of themselves at a party doing keg stands in a dress. “Oh, hi there.”

Am I just getting older? Am I losing my cool – what little there ever was of it. I drive a Yaris now and love it. I am at work right now listening to music from the 80s on imeem and thinking back to “the good old days”. The 80s was over TWENTY years ago. Twenty.
Ronald Reagan. The median household income in the US was $23,618. Madonna was on “The Virgin Tour” albeit a few years too late. And…British scientists reported that there was an opening of an enormous hole in the earth’s ozone layer over Antarctica. That was all 1985. It all went a little more nutty after that.
In 1986 we had the Challenger explosion, Chernoblyl had it’s little slip, and The Oprah Winfrey Show hit national television. Clearly the beginning of the end.

To hell with Facebook.

Escape Pod is an amazing podcast by Stephen Eley. He rounds up an awesome assortment of fantasy and science fiction by equally amazing authors and sends it out into the world for all to hear for free. ((Though, donations are welcomed!)) The stories range from the strange to the funny to the thought provoking and always hit the mark for truly fun entertainment.
The audio quality is fabulous. Mr. Eley manages to get out casts often and keep the audio standards high. He reads some of the stories, but he also enlists others to read stories as well.
We here at amore eroma highly recommend this podcast. Especially if you have a commute that spans more than 45minutes one way!
